Automatic system updates

Each time you turn on your Chrome device, the system automatically checks for updates and applies any updates that it finds. This means your device will always get better over time and you'll always be using the latest and greatest version of the operating system.

Update notifications

If your Chrome device detects that updates are available while you’re signed in, this update icon appears in the status area. Follow these steps to apply the update:

  1. Click the status area in the lower-right corner, where your account picture appears.
  2. Select Restart to update.
  3. Your Chrome device will shut down and automatically restart, with the update applied.

Check for updates

You can check if updates are available at any time:

  1. Click the status area in the lower-right corner, where your account picture appears.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click on Help on the left.
When your Chrome device checks for updates, it sends information, such as version number, language, and other update-related details, back to Google servers. This information is not associated with you or your Google Account.
