It is possible to set your status to appear invisible when using Google Chat in Gmail, iGoogle, or orkut. While signed in as Invisible, you'll appear offline to your contacts (subject to the details below). However, you can still start a chat with any of your online contacts while you are in this status.
To go invisible, select Invisible from the status drop-down menu in your chat list.
If you don't want a particular person to be able to see your online status, you can block that person. Once blocked, though, you won't be able to see their status, and you won't be able to communicate with them through chat.
Chat and other clients
- When chatting with someone who is using Hangouts, please keep in mind that the Hangouts app doesn't support invisibility. When you set your Google Chat status to invisible, Hangouts users will see your profile picture without a green bar underneath, indicating that you may be idle on your computer. Learn more
- If you are signed in to the Hangouts app on your mobile device, in Chrome, Gmail, or in Google+, you will be unable to set your status to invisible.
Google Talk and other clients:
- If you set your status to invisible in Google Chat, then you'll appear offline to your contacts who are also using Google Chat, Google Talk, or other 3rd party chat apps.
- However, if you are signed in to Chat with a status of invisible in one location like Gmail, but signed in with an active status using another client, you will appear online to your contacts.
