Update to Healthcare and medicines policy: Prescription Opioid Painkillers (March 2020)

Beginning in March, 2020, the Google Ads healthcare and medicines policy will be updated to prohibit advertising drug terms related to prescription opioid medicines in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. Ads for all prescription drug terms will continue to be prohibited outside of the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

Google will continue to allow advertisements for opioid drug terms by addiction treatment services to assist with opioid addictions. Addiction treatment services that want to run ads using drug terms related to opioids must be certified under our Addiction Services policy.

In other limited cases, we will allow exceptions to this policy for public health and safety awareness campaigns from governmental or well-established non-profit health advocacy organizations. Advertisers that qualify for these exceptions can request certification with Google beginning in early March 2020, when we update the Healthcare Certification Form.
