Turn services on/off for certain users

Watch a video

Which Google Apps services are available to user is determined by which organizational unit the user belongs to. As the administrator, you assign users to organizational units, and you specify which Google Apps services are available to users in each organizational unit. (To control service access for a single user, create an organizational unit containing just that user.)

By default, an organizational unit inherits the services settings of its parent in the organizational tree. However, you can override the inherited setting. The new setting applies to users in that organizational unit, and any children of that organizational unit inherit the new setting.

You can turn a core Google Apps service on or off for an organizational unit only when the service is enabled at the account level. Disabled core services do not appear in the list on this page. Non-core services, such as Google Blogger, Reader, Google Voice, Picasa Web Albums, AdWords, and iGoogle, are active or inactive based solely on the settings for the organizational unit.

To select which services are available to users:

  1. Log in to the Google Apps administrator control panel.

The URL is https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/primary-domain-name, where primary-domain-name is the domain name you used to sign up for Google Apps.

  2. Click the Organization & users tab.

  3. In the organizational tree on the left, select the organizational unit for which you want to set the available services.

  4. Click the Services tab.

For each Google Apps service, the Services tab shows whether the service is currently ON or OFF for users in the selected organizational unit. It also shows whether the current setting was Inherited from a parent organizational unit or has been Overridden for this organizational unit. (The root organizational unit does not have inherited settings.)

  5. To override an inherited services setting, click the Override this setting link to the right of the ON / OFF control, then click ON or OFF to change the setting.

If the setting is already Overridden, just click ON or OFF to change the setting.

  6. To return a setting to inheriting from the parent organization unit, click Use inherited.

  7. Click Save changes.

Notes:

  • Changing the availability of the service for an organizational unit also affects any organizational units that are its children in the organizational tree. The children organizational units inherit the new setting unless they override it.
  • It may take up to 24 hours for a service on/off change to take effect.
