What’s happening to VPN by Google One?

Starting June 20, 2024, VPN by Google One will be discontinued.

VPN alternatives

  • As part of its phone plans, Google Fi Wireless offers a VPN. Try Google Fi Wireless with VPN at no charge.
  • As part of their system settings, Pixel 8 and newer devices offer a built-in VPN.
  • Pixel 7 devices
    • After VPN by Google One is removed from the Google One app, Pixel 7 users can continue to use VPN functionality when they update their system software.
    • Through a system update in June 2024, Pixel enables VPN by Google, a built-in VPN, for Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold.
  • Other VPNs available in the Play Store.

Uninstall VPN by Google One on Windows

  1. Open Start menu and then Settings.
  2. Click Apps.
  3. Under "Apps & features," search for VPN by Google One.
  4. Click VPN by Google One and then Uninstall.
  5. Confirm uninstall prompt.

Uninstall VPN by Google One on macOS

  1. Open Finder.
  2. In the sidebar, click Applications.
    • You can also use Spotlight to search for VPN by Google One.
  3. Drag VPN by Google One to the Trash.
    • Alternatively you can:
      1. Right-click VPN by Google One.
      2. Select Move to Trash.

Tip: If you're asked for a username and password, enter the credentials of an administrator account on your Mac. This can be the name and password you use to log in to your Mac.

Turn off VPN by Google One

Turn off the VPN if you have internet connection issues.

Windows

  1. On the system tray or the taskbar notification area, right-click the VPN by Google One logo .
  2. Click Turn off VPN.

macOS

  1. On your device, open the Network System Preferences.
  2. Click VPN by Google One.
  3. Click the Disconnect button.
  4. Verify that "Google One VPN" is off.

Why was VPN by Google One discontinued?
With the focus to provide the most in-demand features, VPN by Google One is discontinued. However, it’ll continue to be available as a built-in capability on Pixel 7 and up devices and via Google Fi Wireless.
What happens when VPN service is deactivated while I use it?
The Google One app shows an alert that indicates the VPN functionality is no longer available. Soon after that, any new or existing VPN connections disconnect automatically.

  • For the best performance on Pixel, VPN by Google is optimized and provides a fully integrated experience in the phone’s settings.
  • Based on which network the phone is connected to, VPN by Google can automatically connect or disconnect itself.
  • The option to use a broader IP address region, like country-level IP address versus city-level or state-level, isn’t available in VPN by Google.
  • The ability to block the internet if the VPN gets disconnected isn’t available in VPN by Google.
